Kenny’s Story

KennyKenny was 11 years old when we admitted him to hospice and very wise beyond his years, as most children are with a terminal illness. He lived with his mother and younger brother who adored him. Kenny was very much the man of the house, worrying about them and helping make a lot of the decisions about his illness and his care. They lived in a small north Georgia community that adopted Kenny and his family, they named a day for Kenny and called him The Little Soldier Boy. He was even named an Honorary Soldier, with the military actually coming to honor him. We, at Georgia Mountains Hospice fell in love with him immediately.

Kenny’s wish was to go to the Georgia/Georgia Tech game in Athens, you see Kenny was a big Georgia Fan. They had tried before to get tickets and were unsuccessful, so Kenny was thrilled when we were able to get tickets, on the 50 Yard line, for this sold out event. Kenny’s biggest problem now was who to take. You see we had gotten four tickets, so obviously it would be Kenny, his mom and little brother, but what to do with the fourth ticket. After much thought between his grandmother and his girlfriend, love won. He took his 12 year old girlfriend. So dressed in all of their Georgia attire, they attended the game where fortunately Georgia won.

Kenny lost his battle not long after that at the age of 12 years old. We will remember him and his family always, never forgetting the lessons he taught us.
